Chapter Fifteen: Conscious Avoidance

I walked in on Lee-Lee telling Shira her fucking crazy ass life story. As if anybody cared. Lee-Lee's true colors had shown, and I now knew how grimy she really was. She caught me off guard hitting me like that, but this was far from over. I stood outside the cell and called to my real friend.

"Shira, I need to talk to you." I didn't even acknowledge Lee-Lee.

"Pauline, you are going to get in trouble. You are not even supposed to be over here," Shira said. Lee-Lee stood up when she saw me.

"Yo, Pauline, let me holler at you for a minute," Lee-Lee had the nerve to say. I wasn't trying to hear nothing she was talking about. I didn't even acknowledge the fact that she was there. She got the hint and sat back down. Shira stepped out of the cell to kick it with me.

"I was going to come talk to you at chow. What's up?" Shira asked.

"Tell your friend to leave me alone and never to talk to me again. There was no excuse for what she did. I can't tell her myself because I might kill her, so you do it."

"Girl, please! You know Lee-Lee is crazy. She is really sorry. She told me that her father died, so she just lost it for a minute."

"I'm not trying to hear that. What I need to talk to you about is much more important than this prison drama. I need your advice on what I should do."

"Do about what?"

"Come on and I'll tell you!"

Two years ago . . .

"Ramel, this is so beautiful," I said, looking out from the huge window in the Grand Marquis Hotel in Paris, France. My man of four years, Ramel spoiled me rotten. We lived together, had two-year-old twin boys, and I loved him more than anything.

For some strange reason, Ramel would not make me his official wife. Yeah, I was wifey no doubt, but I wanted to be his wife. I wanted my last name to go from Witherspoon to Raggerio, like yesterday. Last month we were in the Bahamas. The month before that we were in Zurich. I expected a big diamond ring on each trip and was continuously disappointed.

Right now, right here in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower staring back at us, would be the perfect time for him to just drop down on one knee and propose. I walked outside in the warm air as I sipped wine on the veranda. When I heard him call my name, I jumped. Maybe this was it. The moment! I looked perfect in my white, full-length La Perla silk nightgown. My hair was pulled up into a loose bun, and my cute little toes were perfectly manicured. I was definitely suckable tonight.

"Yes, honey!" I called out. He was sitting on the edge of the bed. I sat down beside him. His shimmering walnut-colored eyes got me every time. I couldn't look at them too long without damn near melting.
